First the linky.
I went thru a period when I thought scifi was all tapped out too. After 6 months of arguments and discussions with Belyal a few years back I started reading it again...alot. I do think there is a ton of total crap out there now but who cares? Just like anything else you have to wade thru the bad and the good. And the good is just so....good. Unlike the referenced blogger I love Stross. Does that mean I love all his books? No. His Merchant Princes is just about as boring as I can imagine. Glasshouse didn't hold my interest. But Accelerando is one of my all time favorites. Same with Scalzi. Love some. Just like others. I think alot of people grew up on scifi like I did and maybe it's the fact that WE changed as much as scifi. As a dad with a family maybe I want a little different qulaity of book than when I was 12, or 16, or 25 even. I'm sure 10 years of predominantly high level nonfiction taught me to expect GOOD prose so that affected my perceptions.
Now I try to be more discerning on what I pick to read since I have less time and higher expectations. Probably the reason certain authors have really tried to create a (and I hate this term) brand for their work. So, I'll probably automatically buy/read Scalzi, Stross or Asher without any investigations on amazon or whatnot but I'll do my research beforehand on most authors.
